Background

The rising demand for personalized comfort and energy efficiency is driving hotels to adopt smarter HVAC solutions. Traditional centralized systems often restrict guest autonomy and increase operational complexity due to manual controls and lack of real-time monitoring.

Our partner, DUOLINK, implemented a wireless HVAC retrofit at Grupo Arcor's corporate hotel in Argentina using Milesight's LoRaWAN® devices. Leveraging Milesight's easy installation and seamless integration, DUOLINK enabled decentralized room level temperature control, improved energy management, and enhanced guest experience — all without replacing the central HVAC system or adding new wiring.

Challenges

No In-Room Temperature Control

Guests could not adjust the temperature in their own rooms. All climate settings were managed centrally, resulting in limited comfort and lack of personalization.

Manual and Inefficient Operations

Temperature adjustments had to be made by front desk staff using wall-mounted panels. This increased workload and delayed response to guest needs.

Limited Scalability Due to System Constraints

Each HVAC controller could manage only a few rooms, requiring multiple interconnected units and additional wiring, which complicated maintenance and expansion.

No Real-Time Monitoring, High Energy Waste

The system lacked live data from individual rooms, leading to uniform temperature settings and unnecessary HVAC usage—even in unoccupied spaces.

Solution

At Grupo Arcor's corporate hotel in Córdoba, Argentina, the old centralized HVAC system restricted guests from adjusting room temperatures, while hotel staff had to manage manual controls without real-time data, causing discomfort and wasted energy.

To solve this, DUOLINK deployed a scalable wireless retrofit using Milesight's IoT devices: WT201 Smart Thermostats, UC300 LoRaWAN® Controllers, and UG65 LoRaWAN® Gateway.

Before

Each room is equipped with a Milesight UC300 Controller, which actuates the modulating air valve to control airflow. A WT201 Smart Thermostat in each room continuously measures environmental conditions and transmits the data via the LoRaWAN®. The UG65 LoRaWAN® Gateway receives this data and forwards it to a cloud platform, which calculates the optimal valve opening percentage and sends corresponding commands back to each UC300 Controller. This enables precise and dynamic temperature control for every room. An additional WT201 Smart Thermostat was installed at the reception to monitor the ambient temperature of the common area and to send a signal to switch the rooftop HVAC unit ON or OFF, based on aggregated demand from all rooms. This strategy ensures energy-efficient operation of the centralized HVAC system. All devices communicate over LoRaWAN® through the UG65 LoRaWAN® Gateway, eliminating the need for new wiring or infrastructure modifications. Hotel staff can monitor and manage the entire system in real time from a dedicated PC interface at the reception, with access to each room's status in real time.

This smart retrofit improved guest satisfaction, cut energy use, and simplified operations—all without replacing the existing HVAC system or rewiring.
